2007-2008 Boys Basketball
Week 1 Rundown 12/10/07 Week one for the Ekalaka basketball team kicked off as they traveled to Hysham to face off against the Pirates. There was a lot of pressure riding on the Bulldogs, this not only being their first game, but their first conference game as well. However, missed free throw opportunities came back to bite the Bulldogs in the hind parts. Once the Pirates drew first blood, they were resilient in not letting up as they never allowed the Bulldogs to gain the lead throughout the game. The game ended with a score of 57-48. The Bulldogs shot 5 for 23 free throws which could have definitely come into play had that percentage been higher. The Bulldogs will look to redeem themselves as they face the Baker Spartans, Friday night and the Broadus Hawks, Saturday night. Week 2 RUNDOWN 12/17/07 Well the second week for the Bulldogs fared about as good as the first week did. First they faced off against a shorthanded Baker Spartan team, which did not turn out like they would have hoped. The Dogs fell behind early with an 8 point deficit after the first quarter. The were unable to recover from it, as the Spartans poured it on them the rest of the game building their lead to a final score of 63-49. The leading scorer for the Bulldogs was Cody Cole with a whopping 14 followed by Jeremy Pardee with 12. Saturday was a whole new day for the Bulldogs as the Broadus Hawks came to town. The Dogs had to count this as a conference game. The Bulldogs had hope of getting their first win of the season, but the Hawks had other things in mind. It was an evenly matched contest after one quarter where the dogs found themselves down by only one point. The Hawks pulled ahead in the second quarter leaving the dogs with a halftime deficit of eight points. The second half was about the same as the first as the dogs couldn't recover from being down, losing once again by a score of 64-58. This week the Bulldogs travel to Scranton ND on Tuesday, then on Friday Northern Cheyenne comes to to town and finally traveling to Jordan to take on the Mustangs Saturday. Week 3 Rundown 1/04/08 Week three of the Carter County Boys Basketball Team finally displayed the first bright light thus far of the season. Notching their first wins of the season, week 3 allowed the Bulldogs to improve their conference record to 2-2. The Bulldogs hosted the Northern Cheyenne Eagles on December 21st. Although the Eagles squad seemed to be larger than in past years, the elite force of young Bulldogs seemed to be no match for the Eagles. The Eagles came out determined and played with all their hearts but in the end the Bulldogs would triumph 66-50 in their first conference win. The Bulldogs used the momentum of their previous game when they made the long trek to Jordan to face off against the Mustangs. The Mustangs came out firing and may have possibly had the Bulldogs worried for just a split second due to the Bulldogs scoring only 4 points in the first quarter. But the Bulldogs would not be outdone. They rallied together to outscore Jordan in the second and fourth quarters to end the game with a Bulldog victory, 54-45. The Bulldogs face the Terry Terriers and the Rosebud Wranglers in week 4. Week 4 rundown
1/07/08
The Bulldogs kept their momentum going as the Terry Terriers came to town. The Bulldogs started the game very hot scoring 25 points in the first quarter. After that they never slowed down rolling on to a huge victory of 73-44. High Scorer for the game was Captain Awesome with 25 followed by Big Mike Hansen with 12 and The Colenator with 10. With the victory it brought the Bulldogs over 500 in conference play with a record of 3-2.
Saturday the Dogs traveled to Rosebud to take on the Wranglers looking for their fourth consecutive win. The Bulldogs opened the game on a strong note opening up a 22 to 13 lead over the Wranglers. In the Second quarter the Bulldogs stepped up the defense holding Rosebud to only 2 points. The game ended with a final score of Ekalaka 78 Rosebud 38. Leading scorer for the game was The Colenator with 20 followed by Big Mike Hansen with 15. The Bulldogs Conference record is 4-2 going into the two toughest conference games next week playing Wibaux and Plevna. Week 5 Rundown 1/14/08 In week 5 of basketball the Bulldogs were feeling merciful as they kindly let two of their conference teams triumph over them, allowing these opposing teams to improve their winning records. The only setback was that this did hurt the Bulldogs record, putting them back at the .500 mark with a conference record of 4-4. On the 11th of January, the Bulldogs traveled to Wibaux to face their rival Longhorns. The Bulldogs came out swinging giving the Longhorns everything they had. The Bulldog's valiant effort, however, did not pay off as the Longhorns won 68-55. At least we whipped them in football. High scorers for Ekalaka included Orry Fruit with 14 and Michael Hansen with 12. The next night, the Bulldogs looked to redeem themselves when they hosted the Plevna Cougars. Getting down in the first quarter, the Bulldogs had to fight back to get back in the chase, and it was no surprise that they did just that. Before anyone knew it the Bulldogs were back within 2 at the half. The second half was a battle to the very end. However, the Bulldogs could not quite pull it off as they ended up losing 63-58. Had Plevna had their own football team, we would have whipped them too. Steven Salyers led the Bulldogs with 15 points followed by Orry Fruit with 12. This upcoming week the Bulldogs get a break from conference play when they travel to Baker and Broadus. Week 6 rundown
1/21/08
Week 6 was another tough contest for the Bulldogs as they had to travel to Baker Friday to take on the Spartans. The Bulldogs opened the game out a little slow getting down by 5 at the end of the first quarter. The rest of the game seemed to be very equal but the Dogs couldn't overcome their early deficit. The Spartans were triumphant against the Bulldogs beating them with a final score of 56-49. High scorer for the Bulldogs was Orry Fruit with 17 followed by Mike Hansen with 12. On Saturday the Dogs would load up and head south to go take on the Broadus Hawks. The Bulldogs were trying to get a victory over a non-conference opponent but it was not looking very promising as the Hawks have been on a roll this year. The Bulldogs got up on them early and stayed there for most of the game. The Bulldogs tied the game at the end of the fourth quarter sending the game into overtime. In overtime the Hawks were able to hold off the Bulldogs. Orry Fruit, Mike Hansen, and Steven Salyers were sent to the bench fouling out. The Hawks beat the Bulldogs with a final score of 63-57. High Scorers for the Bulldogs were Orry Fruit with 22 and Steven Salyers with 11. Next week the Bulldogs will travel to Northern Cheyenne on Friday and will take on the Jordan Mustangs at home on Saturday. Week 7 Rundown 1/28/08 Week Seven of the Bulldog basketball season consisting mostly of kicking tail feathers and taking manes as they defeated the Northern Cheyenne Eagles and the Jordan Mustangs. It was Friday the 25th when the Bulldogs traveled deep into Native American territory to face the Eagles for the second time this season. The Bulldogs triumphed in their first encounter, however the Eagles must have been looking for redemption as they came out firing ending the first quarter on top, 21-11. The Bulldogs weren't going to stand for it. They rallied back in the second quarter to bring the point spread within one. The second half was a barn burner, the score going back and fourth between the two teams up until the bitter end when Michael Hansen drained a basket with 10 seconds left to put the Dogs up by one, making the Bulldogs victorious with a score of 64-63. The following night the Bulldogs got off the road to host the Jordan Mustangs. Like the night before the Bulldogs found themselves down in the first quarter but retaliated in the second to bring the score to 30-25. The Dogs didn't look back and finally defeated the Mustangs of Jordan, 61-48. This upcoming week the Bulldogs will travel to Terry to face the Terriers and host the Rosebud Wranglers in Ekalaka. Week 8 rundown
2/3/08 Week 8 for the ferocious Bulldogs was a good one. They traveled to Terry Friday to show them who the big dog was. It wasn't much of a contest as the Bulldogs got up early on the Terriers and stayed there. The Bulldogs dominated the boards out rebounding them 29-7 in the first half and didn't slow down in the second half. The Bulldogs wound up beating the Terriers with a final score of 69 to 38. High scorer for the Bulldogs was Orry Fruit with 26 followed by Michael Hansen with 13 and Jeremy Pardee with 12. Saturday the Bulldogs played host to the Rosebud Wranglers, keeping their momentum from the night before, beating the Wranglers in dominating fashion. The Bulldogs got off to a slow start getting down early to the Wranglers, but the Bulldogs are a team of warriors and they fought back regaining their composure and cruising to a victory 64-39. Cody Cole was the star of the show knocking down 4 three pointers and leading the Bulldogs scoring with 18 points, followed by a close second with the big man in the paint, Michael Hansen with 15. The Bulldogs will play host to the Wibaux Longhorns on Senior night next Friday and then travel to Plevna on Saturday. Week 9 Rundown 2/12/08 In week 9 of basketball the Bulldogs were feeling merciful as they kindly let two of their conference teams triumph over them, allowing these opposing teams to improve their winning records. On the 9th of February, the Bulldogs hosted Wibaux, their rival Longhorns. The Bulldogs came out swinging giving the Longhorns everything they had. The Bulldog's valiant effort, however, did not pay off as the Longhorns won. WE STILL WON IN FOOTBALL. The next night, the Bulldogs looked to redeem themselves when they traveled to face the Plevna Cougars. The Bulldogs came out on fire, hitting every shot and stayed with the Cougars til the bitter end.. However, the Bulldogs could not quite pull it off as they ended up losing 78-69. Had Plevna had their own football team, we would have whipped them too. Orry Fruit led the Bulldogs with 24 points followed by Michael Hansen with 19. This weekend the Bulldogs will travel to Glendive for the 4-C District Tournament as the #4 seed. Week 10 rundown
2/3/08 Week 10 for the Bulldogs was District 4-C Tournament in Glendive. The Bulldogs opened the weekend up on Thursday playing the Jordan Mustangs who they beat twice in their previous matchups. The Bulldogs came out strong getting a lead on them and never looked back. The win advanced the Bulldogs on to a game versus their rival team the Wibaux Longhorns. The Bulldogs opened the game up ready to roll, but the Longhorns made short work of the Bulldogs by hitting just short of a million three pointers. The Bulldogs lost big and went right to the loser out game against the Northern Cheyenne Eagles. The Bulldogs knew that it was do or die and came out ready to play. It was a back and forth game until midway through the third quarter when Steve Salyers came up with two big steals to give the Dogs momentum and allowed them to keep the lead the rest of the game. They moved to the Consolation game against the Hysham Pirates. The Bulldogs had to win this and they would head right to Billings for Divisional. The Bulldogs came out ready to play, they got up on the Pirates early and then controlled the rest of the game. The Bulldogs beat the Pirates by 15 so they will be going to Divisional Basketball tournament in Billings. They will play their first game at 6:30 p.m. vs. Bridger at the Shrine auditorium.
Week 11 Rundown 2/26/08 The Bulldogs defied all odds in week 11 of their basketball journey. There were only a faithful few who thought the Bulldogs would march into the Shrine Auditorium and have any success whatsoever. The Dogs arrived at the Shrine Auditorium, a cold and dreary afternoon, to face the highly talked up Bridger Scouts. The weather matched the game as the Bulldogs struggled. Excess missed shots and turnovers eventually led to an Ekalaka defeat 71-50. The Bulldogs then retreated to the Fairfield Inn for the night to prepare themselves for the Harlowton Engineers. The cloud-like beds and fresh brewed coffee straight from the hills of Columbia must have been just what the Bulldogs needed. They burned and pillaged the Engineer's ego with a score of 70-64. The Bulldogs ended their day with high spirits and aspects of being the 2008 Class C Divisional Runners up. The next morning the Bulldogs walked out onto the crisp parking lot to load their bus to face the Broadview/Lavina Pirates. The Bulldogs fought like warriors. However their dreams of making the state tournament were crushed, loosing to the Pirates 70-64. The Bulldogs could have easily conquered Broadview or Lavina, but Broadview/Lavina was simply too much. The Bulldogs finished their 07-08 season with dignity, achieving more than many thought they could. Thanks to their excessive charm and devilishly good looks, the 2008 Bulldogs will be a team remembered for the ages.
