Math Team Three teams from Ekalaka competed in the Regional Math Contest in Forsyth in March. Students take three individual tests and a team test during the afternoon. High score on the grades 9-10 team test this year for Class C was earned by Ekalaka’s Emily Brence, Greg Brence, Jessica Cole, Emma Guyer, Pat Hansen, and Tylyn Knapp. Ninth-grader Cele Ketchum also contributed to the contest by competing in the individual competitions. Edged out of first place by one point was Ekalaka’s junior/senior team represented by Angela Brence, Leah Brence, Kelli Carroll, Orin Hansen, Ches Meyer, and Jeremy Pardee. Earning a superior rating (top15%) on all three tests taken during the day was Jessica Cole. Only nine other math contest participants out of the approximately 370 participants earned this distinction. Another formidable competitor from Ekalaka was Greg Brence, who earned a silver rating (a combination of superior ratings (top15%) and honorable mentions (next 20%)) on each of his three tests. Representing grades 7 and 8 this year were Lane Butler, Logan Bauman, Caitlin Dalzell, Sloan Fix, and Brittany Hansen. The team faced tough competition this year from a bevy of teams from Terry, Plevna, and Hysham and managed to score in the middle of the pack.A regional scholarship of $200 is awarded each year to the senior male and female with the highest combined scores on the Scholarship, Senior, and Finite tests. This year’s awardees are Alex Whitmayer of Terry and Justin Lammi of Broadus. The teams were accompanied to Forsyth by Sharon Carroll, Llane Carroll, Jennifer Johnson, and Wally Fox. Ms. Jessie Collins and the staff at Forsyth High School coordinated the event. |
