Science goes to Utah

Matt McCabe, Andy Young, Travis Haxton and Mrs. Linda Rost left for the Intermountain Junior Science& Humanities Symposium in Salt Lake City, Utah on Tuesday, March 4. They stayed in Bozeman the first night and went the rest of the way the next day. They stayed on the University of Utah, Salt Lake City campus.

Wednesday night they listened to a guest speaker on the topic of Gay Worms (yes, it is what you think it is). On Thursday they had a civil engineering workshop and a trebuchet competition in which they won 2nd place. That night they had lab tour and went to the IMAX theatre and mall, where they saw a Pink Floyd Laser Light Show. On Friday they had their oral and poster presentations and  then went to the Hogle Zoo, where they had a scavenger hunt and banana split sundaes. On Friday night they had another guest speaker , this time the topic was Dark Matter and Space. They left for home on Saturday morning.

Andy Young and Travis Haxton worked on their project together. They competed in the competitive poster category. Their project was on comparing the energy output of wind and solar panels. They did well, but were not top placers.

Matt McCabe did an oral project. His project was on soil pH and spring wheat. He also did well, but wasn’t a top placer either.

Andy, Travis, and Matt think that the most fun part of the trip was the laser light show. They admit that they did learn stuff about worms, computer engineering technology, and the universe.

Science Fair

For those of you who missed it, the first annual EGS/CCHS Science Fair went off on Thursday with a great deal of fan-fare.  It was a real opportunity to see what smart students we havehere in Carter County.

During the morning, students from CCHS helped judge the grade school entries, giving the younger students feedback on their projects and the older students a glimpse of what it was like on the other side of the judging table.

In the afternoon, those tables were turned and it was time for the CCHS entries to be judged.

Entries ranged from projects in biology to earth science, and the number of displays was staggering.

According to Tylyn Knapp, who took photos at the fair, the displays were pack in so closely that it was difficult to take pictures.

Winners at the HS/JHS level are: in the area of Biology – 1st: place, Alex & Matt; 2nd, Lane and Jacob; 3rd, Megan & Hali; Physics – 1st, Andy and Travis; Tied for 2nd, Cody and Orin; Earth Science – 1st, Angela; 2nd, Emma, 3rd, Austin.
